I am really mad. For all of you who don’t know, back in December 30, 2004, there was a fire at a club here in Buenos Aires. Over four thousand kids went to see a local and very popular rock band called Callejeros. The place was not supposed to host more than 1200 people, but, who said that laws are supposed to be followed?
In that show, in a place that did not have fire exits (the only doors that were supposed to act as fire exits were locked, so people could not get in without paying), that had a roof made of a material that was highly flamable, some kids light up candle lights. So, in just a couple of minutes, the whole roof was on fire. The lights went out, the kids tried to get away…
193 kids died, as of today. Just like that.
Why? Because the band, the manager, the so-called business man that managed the club, the goverment inspectors, the city government, the mayor of the city, they were all in for just a couple of extra bucks. You know.
My 19 year old brother, Pedro Tomas Iglesias, was in that fire. He died, like most of the kids there, whilst trying to save other kids. There were even young babies, less than two years old, who did not make it.
Now, we still have the same government. The main responsible for assuring the security in such places, mayor Anibal Ibarra, said that there’s no way the city can guarantee the security of its citizens. Even strange, foreign web sites know who to blame. But not Argentinians.
Today I found out that even the band members are thinking about doing another show. They will perform in a major soccer stadium for over 50 thousand people.
Is everybody gone mental? What is wrong with everyone?
I sincerely do not know if I am crazy, or they are.
Just hope that those kids who made it out there, and that today are battling with psicological and medical problems, can build up their lifes once again. That they can survive those crucial memmories.
I know my brother is in a much better place right now. But what about the rest?
Had to let it go.
